Apple and AAP release guide for healthy family digital habits
On September 29, Apple and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) released “Building Healthy Digital Habits: A Guide for Families.” It is designed to help parents balance screen time with sleep, physical activity, schoolwork, and time with family and friends.
The guide outlines six steps: talking with children about screen time, creating a Child Account, configuring protections for apps and websites, setting a device-use schedule, managing communications, and revisiting the family plan as children grow. Apple highlights tools including Ask to Buy, Ask to Browse, Time Allowances, Schedules, and Communication Safety.
AAP guidance has been adapted to Apple’s newer parental controls. The approach does not prescribe one identical limit for every child; instead, it encourages families to consider age, development, and their own routines. The guide also includes more detailed screen-time guidance for age groups ranging from infants to teenagers.
The updated Screen Time features are available with iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27. Apple says all devices in a Family Sharing group need the corresponding current system versions, while some features may not be available in every region, language, or on every model.
